Emerald Ash Borer
The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a wood-boring beetle native to Asia that attacks all species of true ash (Fraxinus sp.). This insect is new to the Pacific Northwest. First detected in Oregon in 2022, it is suspected to have spread along the I-5 corridor and into the Seattle area.
This beetle lays eggs on bark in the upper crown. When larvae hatch, they burrow under the bark and feed on the nutrient dense cambium layer thereby girdling the branch. When trees die from emerald ash borer damage, they rapidly lose structural integrity and become a hazard to property owners and tree care providers.
Prevention is the most effective strategy to protect your trees. Proactive and consistent treatment is highly successful for preventing emerald ash borer damage.
Bark Beetles
There are many species of bark beetle in Western Washington, including black turpentine, engraver, Douglas-fir and others. Some conifers are highly susceptible to damage by bark beetles – particularly most true pines (Pinus sp.) – while other trees are not easily damaged or may not respond well to treatment. Beware of inaccurate or misleading information you may hear, particularly from companies “door knocking” in your neighborhood.

Drought Stress Management
Restoration after damage
The purpose is to improve a tree’s structure or appearance after wind/snow damage or prior detrimental maintenance, such as topping or lion-tailing. Restoration is performed by selective removal and/or reduction or branches, sprouts and stubs to encourage growth in a more natural form. The most effective restoration is usually accomplished over several pruning cycles.

Bronze Birch Borer (BBB)
The bronze birch borer (Agrilus anxius) is a wood-boring beetle native to North America that severely damages birch trees throughout Seattle and Western Washington. It lays eggs on smooth bark in the upper crown. When larvae hatch, they burrow under the bark and feed on the nutrient dense cambium layer thereby girdling the branch.
European white birches (Betula pendula) are particularly susceptible to the bronze birch borer, and it can be damaging all birch species. Preserving birch trees requires a combination of pruning and insect control treatment. Being proactive is essential. These measures are most successful in vigorous trees in good condition.
Growth Regulation
Managing crown size is a common need for large trees in city neighborhoods. Application of a plant growth regulator suppresses crown growth (shoot elongation) by prompting the tree to reallocate nutrient resources to defensive strategies. This provides the important benefits of limiting crown size, increasing foliage density and stimulating production of valuable fibrous roots, all of which make the tree more resilient to extreme heat and drought.
